The layers of a traditional English trifle
A gorgeous medley of temptation; let’s explore the delightful components that make up this classic English treat.
Sponge cake or sponge fingers
The foundation of a heavenly trifle lies in the sponge cake or sponge fingers. Traditionally soaked in sherry or fortified wine, sponge cakes are the perfect canvas for soaking up the divine boozy flavours.
While staying true to tradition with a classic Victoria sponge cake is great, why not experiment with your trifle by trying some different sponge variations? From a zesty lemon drizzle loaf cake, our special chocolate sponge recipe, or our swish Swiss roll recipe, the possibilities are endless!
Jelly and fresh fruit
The combination of tasty jelly and juicy fruit adds a refreshing flavour to your trifle, perfectly complimenting the other layers of the trifle.
Whether you opt for a medley of juicy berries, tropical mangos, or tangy citrus fruits, the choice is yours. You could either incorporate the fresh fruit within the jelly itself or layer it throughout your trifle.
Silky smooth custard
Ah, the custard layer – velvety bliss! This layer brings a luxurious richness to your trifle, adding a gorgeous sweetness and flavour to your pudding. To make things even easier, we have a super simple custard recipe that will take your dessert to new heights of indulgence.
No trifle is complete without its crowning glory – the dreamy whipped cream. Light, airy and oh-so-creamy, it’s the perfect finishing touch to your trifle that brings the whole dish together.
6 tips to help you make a terrific trifle
#1 - Make it the day before
For a show-stopping trifle, prepare it a day in advance. This allows the flavours to mingle overnight and create a harmonious taste explosion. Plus, it gives you plenty of time to make all your components and allow your jelly to fully set. However, it’s best to add the whipped cream just before serving, to help your trifle maintain its luscious texture.
#2 – Keep it in the fridge
Once you’ve crafted your trifle, pop it in the fridge. It can stay in the fridge for 3-4 days, allowing you to savour your delicious dessert at your leisure.
#3 – Allow all the elements to cool down fully
Before you start layering your components into your trifle bowl, make sure all the trifle components (like your custard, sponge cake and jelly) have fully cooled down. This helps make sure each layer maintains its lovely flavours and textures.
#4 – Don’t overwhip your cream
When whipping your cream, be mindful not to overdo it. Whisk your double cream or whipping cream until you achieve stiff peaks, then stop. Overwhipping could result in a grainy cream or even butter, leaving you with a lumpy texture.
#5 – Don’t be afraid to break the rules
Trifles are an excellent canvas for your imagination. Feel free to break the rules and unleash your creativity.
If custard isn’t your cup of tea, try replacing it with whipped cream. If you’re not a fan of jelly, simply use cake, custard and fruit to create your own unique twist . The possibilities are endless, so go ahead and experiment with flavours that resonate with you.
#6 – Jazz your trifle up with a topping
To take your trifle to the next level, consider adding a tantalising topping. We have a range of dessert syrups that can add some incredible bursts of flavour, choose from our delicious strawberry, chocolate, butterscotch or maple dessert syrups. And if you’re looking for a truly golden twist, drizzle Lyle’s Golden Syrup on top for a caramelised, buttery flavour that will leave everyone craving more.
